Price Lists

Imprint from a Cheese Knife Blade, Princess Pattern

These STIEFF price lists show what various items were selling for in different years.

Note that prices go up and down all depending on the cost of silver. The silver used by silversmiths like Stieff was not raw silver or ingots. The silver for hollow ware was bought in rolled sheets of various thicknesses.

The blanks for flatware would have been thicker pieces of silver. This silver would have been kept in the second floor vault at the factory.

Here are the cost averages for silver from 1900-1998.  As you compare prices of silver through the years compare the cost of silver too. You can really see the damage to the market when the Hunt Bros. tried to corner the silver market in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This volatility in the market made the price of Sterling Silverwares out of the reach of most people. This was another nail in the coffin for the silver industry.

This order ticket is the oldest “price list” that we know about.

This is an order for pieces in the Victoria Pattern from 1897. Note the prices on the right. The 1/2 in the quantity row indicate half dozens.

This order is for a total of 37 pieces of Sterling Silver for 12.75
