1924 Christmas book

This book has a dark “Christmas Green” cover with Red and Black print.

The inside front and back covers are plain. The size is 7.25 inches tall by 3.75 inches wide. There is no date, nor is the Stieff address given, so exact dating is not possible.  Prices are a bit higher than the 1923 price list and a bit lower than the 1926 lists. Puritan is featured in the “centerfold” , and because of production delays full production did not start until very late 1923 or 1924.

This leads me to believe that this is Christmas 1924 and the lack of address is because The Stieff Company would be moving soon to the new a new headquarters... 800 Wyman Park Driveway factory in Spring 1925.

From my personal collection of Stieff papers

The grouping of Lady Claire in with the plain designs is confusing to me.  Lady Claire was a hand engraved pattern... and certainly not plain.

During the 1920’s, America was in the midst of a second “Colonial Revival” The first having been around 1876 as we celebrated the Centennial. The expanding economy of the 1920‘s and this second revival resulted in a boom of large, upper class homes in the colonial style. These homes were outfitted with what Americans perceived as plain, colonial style silver.  Stieff, coming from the colonial city of Baltimore was there to fill the needs of American tables.
