The 1937 Stieff Catalog   Pages 44-49

Something that needs to be explained here... 048 is an Individual Ash Tray. These would have been used after dinner when desert was served. After-dinner cigarettes in #054 (holds 10) and the ash trays would be brought out with coffee and desert. They could be shared by two people or  given to one person depending on the budget of the host. These small ash trays kept guests from using the china as an ash tray. The ash trays also worked nicely when palmed.. and carried around a party. It would be hard to carry the ash tray, smoke and carry a drink all at the same time.

Often in todays non-smoking society we see these pieces on ebay or antique stores listed as “nut dishes” and “toothpick holders”.
