Stieff in the news

Here are some magazine and newspaper articles on

The Stieff Company & Baltimore Sterling Silver Co.

In 1902, BSSCo. a trusted  employee was stealing silver products from the company and was caught.

Starting on the left side of the page below, is that report, marked in yellow.

This undated article is from Baltimore Magazine,

a July issue of a year unknown.  It is also incomplete, but it

does explain some of the skills used in making silver.

(and the article ends here, I do not have page 30.)

Here is another view of the 3 piece, 14K Gold Coffee Set shown above and made for Mrs. Charles W. Holton.

Mr. Holton was the Mayor of Essex, New Jersey 1930-1951 and

She was the President of the Federated Garden Clubs of New Jersey

The couple to the right are Mr. & Mrs. Gideon Stieff

Value was $20,000 in 1962 dollars, which would have bought a modest house.

Where is this coffee set now?

Movie Star Natalie Wood gets the

“Diamond Star” treatment...

Charles II reports that Natalie Wood kissed him on the cheek at this meeting.

When he told me this, he quickly looked over to his wife, Priscilla to see her reaction, despite that this had happened well over 50 years ago. Of course Mrs. Stieff had heard this story long ago.

After a recent conversation with his father, Charlie Stieff reports that Ms. Wood only received the

Sterling Silver Diamond Star service and not other payment for appearing in the ads. The Stieff Company’s

Ad agency was also that of Warner Brothers, and it was they that set up the presentation. The promotion ran in

magazines for young women-to-be... like SEVENTEEN.

Not quite news, but interesting

An invite from the President

I love that this is an informal stag night, but IKE will be in black tie,

and business suits are appropriate. One must assume that the

White House’s Stieff Sterling service would be used for such an

informal event, especially when Gideon Stieff is invited.

When Charles C. Stieff III was born in 1955, the First Lady sent a hand

written note to the Mr. & Mrs. Stieff, congratulating them on his birth.

Charles III has the note framed and hanging in his home.

The Jeweler’s Circular  March 19th, 1919 has the following article. Charles Stieff has sold a related business

This a a copy of an article in Silver Magazine (1968) which

was in itself a reprint of a January 1957 article a
“Brief History of Stieff”, distributed by The Stieff Company.

Note: This was one of the first issues of SILVER magazine which started in 1968. Artwork and such are still a bit naive.

Charles C. Stieff ventures into another business.. the Ferry Business.

While stock certificates were sold, I find not evidence that this enterprise ever got away from the dock. At death of Charles C. Stieff in 1923, there is no mention of stock in this company as part of his assets.
