Museum Projects

Stieff made reproductions for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in both Sterling Silver and in Silver Plate.  Here are some examples of the work made for the MFA

Works made for “living museums” like Colonial Williamsburg, Old Sturbridge Village etc. are shown elsewhere on this site.

Farther down are projects from other museums

Stieff made reproduction Paul Revere flatware for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

These pieces were available in both Sterling Silver and in Silver Plate

The Sterling version in blue box

From the style of the STIEFF logo on the box, I would place these as late

1960’s and into the later 1970s for production dates.

The Silver Plate version boxed

Box lid reads as follows

"THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS IN BOSTON HAS ONE OF THE FINEST COLLECTIONS OF IMPORTANT PIECES BY PAUL REVERE, PATRIOT SILVERSMITH.

ITS FINE FLUTED BOWL AND GRACEFUL HANDLE MADE THIS REVERE TEASPOON A RARE FORM.  MADE IN 1785 IN HONOR OF THE MARRIAGE OF NATHANIEL AND ABIGAIL GILMAN, THE ORIGINAL SPOON'S HANDLE CONTAINED THE INITIALS NAG ENGRAVED IN SCRIPT AND SURROUNDED BY A DOTTED AND CHASED ELLIPSE, PENDANT FOLIAGE AND A FLOWER BELOW.  ONLY FOUR PATRONS ARE KNOWN TO HAVE ORDERED REVERE FLUTED TEASPOONS, WHICH WEAR MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE PLAIN ONES.  THE ORIGINAL SPOON WAS A GIFT OF THE PAUL REVERE LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY TO THE MUSEUM IN 1963.  REPRODUCTION LENGTH 5".  PERFECT FOR TODAY'S ENTERTAINING NEEDS, THESE SPOONS CAN BE USED AS A SET OF COFFEE SPOONS, OR FOR DESSERT OR FRUIT.  SEPARATELY, THE SPOON FITS PERFECTLY IN A JAM OR CONDIMENT JAR OR SUGAR BOWL."

Pewter wall hanging

I do not know the function of this piece. It was listed on ebay as a hanging flower pot. It might have been a water dipper, a match holder etc.  Dated 1979.

Height is 6 & 1/8 and 4 & 1/8 in width

Starting in the 1970’s Stieff made various items for

The Smithsonian Institution

The spoon of the “Castle” Admin. Bldg. is fairly common, the National Air and Space Museum spoon is much rarer.

The Smithsonian spoon was made in both Pewter and Sterling Silver.

Many more Smithsonian items made by Stieff are located in the Jewelry/Retail section of this site.
