Clinton mystery Silver

Clinton was introduced in the 1920 Stieff Catalog. The photos below show what appears to be a set of 5 Clinton pattern spoons.  But when you turn them over... the markings are from a much earlier period.

The stampings here are:

STERLING 925 (the crown mark) STIEFF

The hand striking of the STIEFF name dates from around 1904 when the change from BSSCo occurred.  Later dies included the words STERLING STIEFF and no use of the crown mark.

This leaves me wondering... what gives?  When were these spoons made? Were they custom work made by Stieff in the early years to match some Baltimore families silver made by another company?  We will never know.

Stieff did make a pattern called PLAIN during this period, but those have a rounded end on the handle, and are shown in the patterns page. Clinton replaced PLAIN in 1920.
